Becker Traffic Assist Sat Nav

Harman Becker the American parent company of the German Becker manufacturer then decided around 2010 to withdraw from the UK marketplace. Since that time Becker sat navs haven't been readily available in the United Kingdom.

Preloaded with European NAVTEQ street-level map data, Becker sat navs were once available to buy in the UK.

Below we look at the portable Becker sat nav range that was once available to buy from ActiveGPS and other British retailers. We also cover the availability of accessories and mapping for this premium German sat nav brand.

Becker in the UK

Portable in-car becker sat navs were first introduced in the UK in 2005 with the Becker Traffic Assist 7914 model (pictured right), which featured a 3.5-inch touchscreen.

This model was later followed by the Becker Traffic Assist Highspeed 7934 and Becker Traffic Assist Highspeed II 7988 sat navs both of which have the ability to provide live traffic information for your journey, flagging up traffic jam or slow moving traffic.

Later the best-selling Becker Traffic Assist Pro PND (Personal Navigation Devices) were released. Two models made up the Pro series including the Becker Traffic Assist 7916 Pro and Ferrari red Becker Traffic Assist 7929 Pro (pictured left) which was an official licensed Ferrari product. Both of these models featured live traffic information via a special TMC Docking station which powered the then top-of-the-range sat nav as well as delivering traffic information via an FM receiver.

The Traffic Assist 7000 series continued with models offering various screen sizes including the Becker Traffic Assist 7926 and Becker Traffic Assist 7927 which both included a 3.5-inch touchscreen. The Becker Traffic Assist 7827 and Becker Traffic Assist 7977 both for the first time within the Becker sat nav range featured a larger 4.3-inch.

The then top-of-the-range Becker Traffic Assist 7928 (pictured right) featured the largest screen of all Becker PNDs at 4.8-inch. The 7928 was also equipped with 'Reality View' which featured almost 4,000 illustrations of motorway junctions right across the UK and Europe. The idea of which was to make it easier for the driver to know which lane you needed to be in, to either stay on or exit the motorway. This feature is now commonly seen on most other car sat navs including Snooper, TomTom and Garmin.

Following on from the successful 7xxx series, Becker then released the Z series, the first of which was the Becker Traffic Assist Z200. This was closely followed by another first for Becker in the Becker Traffic Assist Z100 Crocodile - the first and only Becker sat nav fully waterproof and designed especially for motorbike use. The oddly shaped outer casing of the Z100 (pictured left) was designed to have the look and feel of crocodiles scales!

A number of Z series models were released including the Z101, Z102, Z201, Z203, Z204, Z205 and another branded Ferrari model in the Becker Traffic Assist Z250 Pro (pictured right).
